Original Yunnan Ethnic Dai Tribe Gourd Flute Hulusi

The hulusi or cucurbit flute is a free reed wind instrument from China. It is held vertically and has three pipes which pass through a gourd wind chest.

The hulusi was originated by ethnic Dai Tribe of Southwest China, which can be dated back to Qin and Han Dynasties (221 BC to 220 AD). The sound of the original Yunnan Dai Tribe hulusi is hauntingly beautiful, fairly soft, and has a very pure, clarinet-like sound. The Dai Tribe men would play it to express their love to women, while other ethnic minorities often played the hulusi in the fields when taking a break from planting or harvesting.

Although the hulusi is still predominantly performed in China, it has in recent years been adopted by European composers and performers. Rohan Leach from England, Rapheal De Cock from Belgium and Herman Witkam from the Netherlands have all taken the instrument in new directions.

Original Yunnan Ethnic Dai Tribe Bawu

Bawu is a transverse blown free reed pipe originated from ethnic Dai tribe of Southwest China. It is traditionally played by ethnic minority groups in the region, but now its influence has spread across China with its evocative sound associated widely with Chinese culture.

Bawu resembles a transverse flute in construction, except for the insertion of a small reed into the blow-hole. The player needs to cover the reed entirely with their mouth and apply substantial air pressure to maintain the vibration of the reed. It has a pure, clarinet-like timbre, and is quite a haunting instrument when played.

In recent years, the rich, mellow tone of bawu has become a favorite with composers of film soundtracks (heavily featured in the film"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", an Oscar Winner for Best Music, Original Score, 2000). Meanwhile, the development of advanced bawu models, such as dual pipes bawu and vertical bawu, has flourished its range and varieties, taking this very traditional instrument into a new height.

Rosewood thumb piano, 5" x 7", 17 steel keys and two vibrato holes on the back. The thumb piano originates in Africa. It is also known as the mbira or likembe. The metal keys are mounted on a wooden box that acts as the resonating chamber. To play, rest the thumb piano on the fingers of both hands and hold it between your palms. Cover the vibrato holes with your fingers. Then pluck the keys with your thumbs. As you play you can un-cover and cover the vibrato holes as you like. Many different tunings are acceptable, according to personal preference. Specific tuning of a thumb piano is only an issue when two instruments are played together; then they should generally agree in tuning. Otherwise, the tuning is subjective and should only be pleasing to the player. The longer keys have lower pitches and shorter keys have higher pitches. The keys can be adjusted by tapping them in or out to adjust their length, and therefore their pitch.
